What is Animal-Assisted Occupational Therapy – and Why Does It Work?

Animal-assisted therapy harnesses the positive, calming, and motivating effects of animals on human development. In our practice, therapist Carolina Keller works closely with her Golden Retriever, Ike, a specially trained and certified therapy dog.

Dogs do not judge. They have no expectations and respond neutrally, honestly, and immediately. This unique trait makes them ideal "social facilitators" and bridges in therapy. For children who might feel blocked, anxious, or experience concentration issues in traditional clinical settings, Ike's presence works wonders. Interacting with him demonstrably lowers stress and helps break down emotional barriers.

Integrating a therapy dog is not simply a pastime; it is a structured method designed to meet specific occupational therapy goals. Whether focusing on fine motor skills, social behavior, or attention regulation, Ike helps your child grow and succeed with enthusiasm.

Ike as a Facilitator & Motivator

Our Golden Retriever Ike is certified as a therapy support dog, working as an active partner alongside Carolina Keller. He creates a safe, warm atmosphere, encourages communication, and motivates children to engage in tasks they might otherwise find strenuous or frustrating. Instead of performing tasks "for the therapist," children interact playfully with Ike.

🎯

Key Focus Areas & Therapeutic Goals

Interactions with Ike target several essential developmental areas. Every session's activities are customized to align with your child's therapeutic program:

  • Motor & Sensory Skills: Brushing, stroking, and feeding treats promote fine motor coordination, strength regulation, and tactile body awareness.
  • Self-Regulation & Emotions: Gentle interaction with Ike develops empathy, frustration tolerance, mindfulness, and the ability to recognize and respect boundaries.
  • Cognition & Communication: Planning obstacle courses for Ike, structuring commands, and communicating with the dog build attention span and language skills.
